The Grand Junction city council will hold a special meeting tonight, Feb. 23, to decide how to fill the vacancy left by the unexpected resignation of mayor Dave Kersey.
Kersey resigned via a text message to city clerk Katherine Thomas on Sunday, with the resignation effective at midnight. Thomas verified with the League of Cities that a text message is considered an “official” communication.
Kersey confirmed his resignation with mayor pro-tem Teresa Lansman, but the reason is still unknown.
The city council will meet at 6 m Thursday to acknowledge Kersey’s resignation and to decide how to proceed. The city council can appoint an individual to fill the position within 60 days, or hold a special election within 90 days. The mayor’s term ends Dec. 31 and would be up for re-election in November.
Kersey was mid-way through his first term as mayor, having claimed the position over longtime incumbent mayor Gerold Herrick in the 2015 election. Kersey works fulltime as a Greene County deputy sheriff.
